ONE PROGRAM.

By the Numbers.

THE BILL BROWN ERA: WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

In 1967, a group of swimmers asked social studies teacher Bill Brown to coach a new water polo team. He didn’t play the sport, but he said yes. Over the next 38 years, he turned Miramonte into a dynasty, winning countless titles and producing Olympians, All Americans, and Hall of Famers. Under Brown, the team became a cornerstone of campus life, and student-athlete development. In 2005, Miramonte honored his legacy by naming the pool the Bill Brown Aquatic Center followed by his induction into the USAWP Hall of Fame in 2012.

PASSING THE TORCH—AND RAISING THE BAR

When James Lathrop joined the program in 2003 and took over as head coach in 2005, he continued Miramonte’s tradition of excellence and values while growing the program. Joey Estrada joined the program in 2003 to lead the Junior Varsity Team. Lathrop a former player under Brown and a standout at Cal, Lathrop led the team to 10 North Coast Section titles in 19 years, including an undefeated national championship season in 2008. He fostered not only top-tier athletes but a culture of character, comradery, and mentorship.

Joey Estrada continues to coach with the program today, having developed more than 70 athletes who have gone on to play NCAA water polo.

A COMMUNITY LEGACY

Miramonte water polo isn’t just a program. It’s a family and lasting community. Alumni return each year dropping into practices, watching games or playing in the annual alumni. Generations of players have followed in their siblings’ and parents’ footsteps. With deep roots in the community’s aquatic culture, this program has shaped lives far beyond the pool.
